Think of the ancient old days. Open your history book or play a game of Ages of Empire you know how the people have been moving all over the world as Nomads. They were moving about in search of food, water and wood for fire and dwelling.
Till now it was believed that no more of such things will happen and people are all settled in their homes safe.
However, world’s leading migration agency has opined that in the next 40 years to come Climate change and environmental degradation will force as many as one billion people to migrate to Southeast Asia, Central America and parts of West Africa. It said that about 25 million to 1 billion people could be displaced by climate change by 2050.
The possible countries to which these people could migrate could be Afghanistan, Bangladesh, most of Central America and parts of West Africa and Southeast Asia.
Now you may think why at all people should leave their present place!
Right, but do you know that in 2008, 20 million people were made homeless by sudden-onset of environmental disasters. These are attributed to global warming increases.
How long will they live or survive in their present dwelling just to die under open air and onslaught of vagaries of weather.
Naturally, they have to shift to some other place. People having money would purchase properties in their countries of choice and then will migrate easily. Poor people may migrate as laborers or may have to survive in their present dwelling.
Already a large number of displaced people were moving to crowded cities, thus putting extra pressure on the poorer countries.
As said before most likely the poor people will have to live wherever they are, but it is not the case of small island states, which islands have disappeared under water, forcing international migration.
The migration agency says that in the last 20 years the number of natural disasters has more than doubled. It says that water pollution, desertification and other strains would make the planet uninhabitable as greenhouse gases keep building up.
It is expected that the global temperatures could rise between 2 and 5 degrees centigrade by the end of this century. This should have profound impact on the movement of people.
In the meeting that is being held in Copenhagen many countries nearly 100 of them had agreed to co-operate in bringing down the global temperatures rise to 1.5 Celsius. There are skirmishes among some countries in the ongoing summit. Clarity on text of draft treaty is missing.
The summit which people saw could provide a much-awaited solution to climate change seems may falter. The poor and developing countries are expecting financial aids to invest in environment friendly projects.
It is time that we people too can contribute whatever we can and see that the money is invested in environmental friendly projects.
